Our Research Program

Our research program investigates centers on molecular epidemiology and parasitology, public health surveillance and risk mapping, of prevalent neglected tropical diseases, specializing in helminths (Schistosoma spp. and other soil transmitted helminths) and protozoan parasites (Giardia spp., Entamoeba spp., Cryptosporidia spp.). We perform amplicon and targeted sequencing, and population genetic analyses to identify and characterize protozoal and helminth agents associated with epidemic disease. We utilize adaptable and field deployable, multi marker typing and next generation amplicon sequencing to genotype parasites isolated from various sources including humans, vector and reservoir hosts in endemic localities to understand parasite transmission and disease epidemiology. Our genetics work in Schistosoma spp has allowed us to genotype field isolates and identify hybrid parasite species in different parasite populations in Africa. Our research is contributing valuable insight into the epidemiology of neglected tropical parasites using innovative approaches that suits the research landscape of endemic regions.
